The yellow liveried Bolow BDS 105 (G-TVAM) was replaced in July with the new aircraft, a red and yellow liveried EC135 Eurocopter (G-HBOB), has an additional seat enabling a family or friend to accompany a patient to hospital.

Not only does the helicopter have greater endurance and fuel capacity – resulting in longer flying times – but it will also be able to access trickier locations.

In addition to compliance with new regulations like IFR (Instrument Flight Rules), twin engine operation and the benefits in costs accrued through fuel efficiency and lower maintenance, the EC135 has a long list of other improvements ranging from streamlined ergonomic design to improved delivery of medical assistance.

The interior is purpose-designed and built for ambulance use, with loading capability for two stretchers from both sides and the rear of the aircraft according to the configuration used.

Features include:

  • Twin engines for safety and can fly at speeds of around 140mph.
  • The EC135 has side or rear loading for stretchers. The Bolkow 105dbs has rear loading only.
  • High manoeuvrability and compact size for landing almost anywhere.
  • Skid under-carriage enabling aircraft to land on a variety of ground conditions and slopes.
  • Main and tail rotors set up high for good obstacle clearance and safety. EC135 also has an enclosed tail rotor for additional safety.
  • More than two hours’ flying time.
  • Full range of high tech medical equipment to care for patients in flight.
  • Low vibration level gives a smooth, comfortable ride.
  • The EC135 had an additional seat – a parent or carer can therefore accompany a sick or injured child.
  • The EC135 has a GPS linked moving map system.
